Beyond the pouch: how ePac is turning packaging into a connected growth channel

For African brands, packaging no longer needs to stop at protection and shelf appeal. ePacConnect turns digitally printed pouches and rollstock into an interactive layer for engagement, authentication and traceability.

Strategic briefing

Three signals for decision-makers

01

Connect

Deliver useful, updateable customer experiences through serialized QR codes.

02

Protect

Give customers a direct route to verify authenticity and help brands detect suspicious scans.

03

Trace

Build product-level visibility across market activity and the wider supply chain.

01

The package becomes a platform

For most of its history, flexible packaging has been judged by three questions: does it protect the product, communicate the brand and perform on shelf? ePac Flexible Packaging is adding a fourth: what can the package do after a customer picks it up?

Through ePacConnect, digitally enabled pouches and rollstock can carry serialized QR codes that open a direct interaction between a brand and the person holding its product. The physical pack becomes a gateway to information, service, verification and a continuing customer relationship.

02

Connect: make every scan useful

A connected experience earns attention by being useful. ePacConnect allows brands to deliver educational content, sourcing stories, recipes, loyalty programmes, promotions and personalized updates through the QR code already present on the package.

Content can be updated in real time without redesigning the physical pack. That gives brand teams a flexible media surface that can respond to product launches, seasons, customer interests and new information while the packaging remains in market.

Commercial intelligence

The pack is no longer the end of the brand story. With ePacConnect, it becomes the beginning of a measurable customer relationship.

03

Protect: turn authenticity into an experience

Product trust is a commercial asset, particularly where brands must protect customers from counterfeits and unauthorized distribution. ePacConnect's serialized QR codes are designed to let customers verify authenticity with a scan while helping brands identify suspicious activity.

According to ePac, its secure-code technology can evaluate whether a code is original, detect copied codes and trigger alerts when the same identity is scanned repeatedly. Authentication therefore becomes both a customer reassurance tool and an additional layer of brand protection.

04

Trace: build visibility beyond the point of sale

The same digital identity can support track-and-trace across a product's lifecycle. ePac positions the technology as a route to supply-chain information from production through purchase and, where the programme allows, onward to use, disposal or recycling.

That individual-product view can help brands understand distribution, logistics and market activity with more precision. The strategic opportunity is to connect operational visibility with customer insight while maintaining clear consent and responsible data practices.

05

A digital manufacturing model built for growth

Connected packaging sits inside a wider digital production model. ePac offers stand-up and lay-flat pouches, sachets and rollstock, and says its platform supports low minimums, multiple SKUs, no plate fees and production aligned more closely with demand. Its Ghana site states that most orders ship within 15 to 20 business days after artwork approval.

Local capability matters. ePac opened a 2,200-square-metre production plant on Spintex Road in Accra after establishing its West Africa operation in 2021. The facility places digital flexible-packaging production closer to consumer-goods businesses across the region, giving emerging and established brands a platform to test, differentiate and scale.

06

Sustainability through smarter demand

ePac's sustainability proposition combines material choices with a production system intended to reduce setup, excess inventory and packaging obsolescence. The company offers options including recyclable PE structures and films containing post-consumer recycled resin, alongside on-demand digital printing.

For brand leaders, the practical question is not whether packaging can carry more technology. It is whether technology can make each pack more useful, more trusted and better aligned with actual demand. That is the shift ePacConnect is designed to enable.

Leadership agenda

What to do next

  1. Choose one customer or trust problem for the first connected-packaging pilot.
  2. Design a useful scan experience before adding promotions or data capture.
  3. Define consent, security and data ownership across every interaction.
  4. Connect authentication and engagement data with supply-chain decision-making.
  5. Use digital short runs to test the proposition before portfolio-wide scale.
